Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England in 1564, William Shakespeare is one of the world’s most famous playwrights. He wrote 37 plays, among them Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Macbeth, all of which are still performed around the world today. Shakespeare’s plays have been translated into over 80 languages and, surprisingly, are still as popular today as when he first wrote them.
Born during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, Shakespeare witnessed the political chaos of England at that time, the war with Spain and the religious tension between Protestants and Catholics.
